Marilyn Monroe

Everything was a song, a fable, but rather a tragedy in the life of Norma Jean Baker (Los Angles, 1926-1962). She herself surrounded by the gossip ink, she said once discouraging all the people that compared her with the Venus de Milo of the twentieth century “Yes, there was something special in me and knew what it was. I was the kind of girl found dead in her bedroom with a tube of sleeping pills in his hand” and capricious fate, Norma knew herself very well.

So that’s how the story of one of Hollywood stars ends, a woman who became the first to wake that spirit of morbid curiosity around death and fame. A person, a human being, that although she was always surrounded by people who loved and adore her she always felt lonely. Same woman that, alone, one night of August 5, 1962 was found dead in her bed with an open bottle of Nembutal, a woman who was seeking glory beyond the walk of Fame. A Place where, as she repeated all her life, could be a real actress.

“What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel Nº 5, of course”

Marilyn Monroe

Today I’ve come to the idea to pay a singular tribute to the woman who best described the fame in its pure state, a woman with two personalities, that as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde had a public life where apparently she felt loved loved by everybody, and an internal private one surrounded by pills and psychoanalysis, in addition to a desire to prove the world that she was worthy as an actress and not always for playing the role of “dumb blonde”

“I don’t mind living in a man’s world as long as I can be a woman in it”

Marilyn Monroe

This year is the fiftieth anniversary of the disappearance of one of the icons and irreplaceable Hollywood star, so it just seemed to me also to pay a tribute to the person who perhaps more know Norma Jean, the person no the actress, the photographer that photographed her from her beginnings; Milton H. Greene. The range of Milton Greene’s subjects include people such as: Frank Sinatra, Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Sophia Loren, Groucho Marx, Audrey Hepburn, Andy Warhol, Judy Garland, Alfred Hitchcock, Ava Gardner, Claudia Cardinale, Paul Newman, Lauren Bacall, Dizzy Gillespie, Catherine Deneuve, as well as many others. But it was his friendship, business relationship and ensuing photographs of Marilyn Monroe for which he is best remembered.

“It’s better yo be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone”

Marilyn Monroe

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so you can learn to let go. Things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they’re right. you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself. And sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together”

Marilyn Monroe

“I’m Selfish, impatient, and insecure. I make mistakes. I am out of control ant at times, hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you don’t deserve me at my best”

Marilyn Monroe

“Imperfection is beauty. Madness is genius. Is better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring”

Marilyn Monroe

“Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss, and fifty cents for your soul”

Marilyn Monroe

“A Career is wonderful thing, but you can’t snuggle up to it on a could night.”

Marilyn Monroe

“Sex is part of nature. I go along with nature”

Marilyn Monroe

But one thing is clear, Marilyn left the bar so high, not only her (because she failed to prove her worth) all the actors and actresses of that time, since then Hollywood stars have not returned to shine as bright as they did in that Golden Age of Cinema. All the photographies shown in this post of Norma Jean were taken by Milton Greene.

Finally, one of the last photos of Marilyn taken by Milton Greene, she is show herself as in the beginnings, wearing red, but she is no longer the innocent Norma Jean that she was before, now now appears in the image and a bit faded as a ghost who tries to escape from  this synthetic fame monster: Marilyn Monroe.

  1. I remember the day her death was splashed in the newspapers(India). Instead of attending classes I stayed away declaring it was a day of mourning! Goodbye Marilyn, once again.

    • Maybe it’s because I’m a strigaht woman, but these don’t strike me as attractive. In one she kinda looks like a chipmunk. I have to say tho, that I can look at the photos of Marily Munro and see that she’s sexy and beautiful. I think if you’re going to re-do Marilyn, you’d better out-do her and in this case, I really think she falls flat. (I don’t mean in the boob area, obviously)

  2. I had a huge poster of her in the net skirt in my bedroom through my late teens. It was inspiring in an age where everyone was desperate to be skinny to have someone to look at as the ultimate goddess who had curves.

    • Aug17Jocelyn The resemblance is ucnnany! I love Michelle, especially in Blue Valentine. Am sure she’ll at the very least get an Oscar nomination. But an Oscar win is definitely in her future
